Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening with VELscope

Oral cancer is a potentially life-threatening disease and we aim to protect our patients from it. Our VELscope oral cancer screenings are performed during your six-month examinations. We perform these examinations frequently because oral cancer is most successfully treated in its early stages. Using fluorescent technology, the VELscope can accurately detect oral abnormalities in the mouth. These abnormalities or lesions can be further tested to see if they are cancerous.

Possible Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer:

  • A lump or thickening in the oral soft tissues.
  • Soreness or a feeling that something is caught in the throat.
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing.
  • Ear pain.
  • Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Numbness of the tongue or other areas of the mouth.
  • Swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable.

Early detection is necessary to increase the chance for successful treatment of oral cancer, An annual VELscope® exam, in combination with visual and palpated examinations, provides the most comprehensive screening procedure for the early identification of oral tissue abnormalities and may just save your life.
